For 2025 ESBB participants, conferencing in Hualien offers more than academic exchange. It’s a unique opportunity to immerse in Taiwan’s rich traditions while enjoying a peaceful escape from fast-paced city life. To make the most of your visit, we invite you to join us for a series of immersive tours that showcase local heritage, hands-on workshops, and the natural wonders of eastern Taiwan.  Explore the tours below to make the most of your visit. The culture tour is a full-day itinerary. You can choose either Tour A and Tour B or Tour A and Tour C to make your day truly memorable.

Tour A: Tzu Chi Cultural Park, Hualien, Fish Ball DIY at Hualien Fishing Harbor and lunch at Hualien Harbor

1. Tzu Chi Cultural Park, Hualien

This park is not just a green space, it’s a living reflection of the values of the Tzu Chi Foundation, which was founded here in Hualien by Master Cheng Yen in 1966. Tzu Chi means “Compassionate Relief” in Chinese, and the organization has grown from a small local effort to one of the most respected international humanitarian NGOs.

2. Fish Ball DIY at Hualien Fishing Harbor

Take a deep dive into Hualien’s vibrant fishing heritage through the Lin Family’s storytelling, craftsmanship, and signature flavors. At this hands-on DIY workshop, you’ll learn the heartwarming story of a family who has perfected the art of traditional Taiwanese fish balls over generations.

Tour Highlights
From selecting fresh local catch and pounding the fish paste to shaping and cooking your own springy fish balls, just like Grandma used to make. Every step is interactive and fun. More than just cooking, this experience offers a meaningful glimpse into the traditions, flavors, and daily life of Hualien’s coastal culture.

Tour B: Amis Millet Culture (Mochi or Weaving) DIY Workshop & Lufung Jade Workshop and Herb Garden and dinner at NDHU

1. Amis Millet Culture (Mochi or Weaving) DIY Workshop

Try on a traditional Amis outfit and join a dance before experiencing two key Amis traditions: mochi-making, known as “toron” in the Amis language, and weaving. The process includes pounding steamed glutinous rice into sticky dough and weaving intricate patterns that preserve cultural identity through techniques passed down for generations. This is a communal activity that symbolizes unity and cooperation.

  • Cultural Introduction to the Amis Tribe
    Learn about the food traditions, values, and seasonal rituals of Taiwan’s largest Indigenous group, the Amis. Also, you’ll explore the symbolism, materials, and colors used in Amis weaving. Each pattern tells a cultural story passed down through generations.
  • Mochi DIY
    Pound steamed glutinous rice by hand and shape it into delicious, chewy mochi, experience the joy of unity through food.
  • Weaving DIY
    Try your hand at simple traditional weaving using colorful threads and create a small keepsake inspired by Amis textile art.

2. Lufung Jade Workshop and Herb Experience

Discover Lufung, where the beauty of Taiwanese jade meets the soothing power of herbs in a unique hands-on experience. Rooted in the Jiang Family’s legacy, Lufung invites you to explore the journey from stone to scent, starting at the jade workshop and continuing into a fragrant herb garden filled with lemongrass, mint, and more. Whether you're a culture lover or curious traveler, Lufung offers a sensory experience shaped by generations of craftsmanship and care.

Jade Crafting
The workshop, run by the Jiang Family, combines traditional carving techniques with modern creativity. It offers visitors a chance to explore the past and actively take part in the craft. Join this Jade DIY Workshop and experience the transformation of raw stone into a meaningful keepsake.

Tour Highlights
Guided by skilled artisans, you’ll grind, shape, and polish your own jade piece. You will take home a unique ornament as a lasting memory of your time in Hualien.

    Learn about Taiwanese jade, its origins, and how to identify quality jade from raw stone—an introduction to a treasured local gem.
  • Jade Crafting Workshop
    Pick your own stone and experience the full process—rough cut, grind, sand, and polish—to shape a personalized jade piece by hand.

Herbal DIY Activities (1.5 hrs)
Next to the Lufung Jade Workshop, this fragrant herb garden offers seasonal scents and a hands-on crafting. Stroll through the mini herb fields, enjoy the soothing aromas, and see how essential oils and floral water are made. The experience ends with creating Lufung’s signature handmade herbal jade soap with a hidden piece of Taiwanese jade in it as a lasting personal keepsake.
